Everyone likes a warm home, especially in the winter months and It’s no secret that heating bills can be costly. Here’s 3 top tips that can help you keep your home warm as well as keep those pesky bills at bay…

Tip 1: Control WHEN you use your heat

Being emergency plumbers in Liverpool, we’ve seen it all when it comes to heating so this might sound obvious but one of the best ways to save money on your energy bills is to get a better handle of when you turn the heating on. The best way to do this is by using your boiler’s timer.

It’s recommended that you turn on your heating around 30 minutes before you get up, 30 minutes before you go to bed and turned off during the hours of the day that you are at work. That way, you are not wasting heat when you don’t actually feel the benefit.

This also applies with water pressure. If you tend to shower more, try turning down the pressure while using the shower to minimise the water usage and save money on your bill. It doesn’t take a lot to save money.

Tip 2: Turn down your thermostat by just one degree

Depending on the age of your boiler, turning down your thermostat by just one degree can save you up to £75 per year. We would recommend that you keep your thermostat around the area of between 18-21 degree for the best balance of warmth and value for money.

To make this even easier, consider getting extra cosy with your family and wrap up warm with extra clothes and layers. We don’t recommend you wear a coat indoors, but wearing an extra pair of socks or wearing a big thick jumper can save you money during the periods where heating is at it’s most.

Tip 3: Check you are getting the best deal

This is something that most of us don’t do enough, but can save hundreds of pounds per year. Taking the time to check that you are getting the deal that’s right for your home and your usage can save you money in the long run.

There are many comparison sites that you can use to help you check, but if you’ve been with the same provider for more than a couple years, then there’s a very good chance that you are paying more than you should. Many energy companies offer lower prices but increase them in future years, so for that reason if you joined at a lower price, it might be that may not be forever.

Unless you truly love the service that you get, we recommend that you take the time to check if you can get a better deal as your customer loyalty may be costing you more in the long run.
